Big Bear Self Storage offers clean, secure storage units for rent that are perfect for regular household items such as furniture or sports equipment and other goods.
But secure storage units are perfect for a variety of uses for private parties or businesses. Last week we discussed how to properly store books but if you have vintage or rare items, these can be pretty fragile and we thought it might be good to share a few more tips especially for them.
Vintage or fragile books are best kept in custom, acid-free book boxes. These can be made or purchased. If you purchase pre-sized boxes, avoid slipcases which leave the spine exposed. Instead, get those with flaps that fold up around the entire book and that can be sealed with velcro or string.
Tall or wider books are best stored flat but avoid stacking more than three books and don’t pack shelved books too snugly. Books should support each other on the shelf but not rub against each other when putting them on the shelf or taking them off. The best way to group your collection is by size.
Using a storage locker is ideal since they are protected from sunlight and other risks found in the average home. The greatest risks to books tend to be moisture, mold, insects, and high temperatures.
Leather bindings may need additional care to avoid damage from dryness and cracking. To protect them, wrap in archival paper or 100% rag paper. Any bindings that are powdery should be wrapped in archival paper to protect both other items and further degradation.
